Acne and its cosmetic approach

Acne is a dermatological condition characterised by the appearance, to a greater or lesser extent, of pimples or inflammatory lesions, comedones, or blackheads and whiteheads on different parts of the body, which can leave marks or scars in those who suffer from it.

Acne is due to an inflammation of the sebaceous gland, which is caused by an increase in sebum production stimulated by the action of hormones. This is why it appears in areas of our skin where there is a higher concentration of sebaceous glands, such as the face, shoulders, chest, back, etc.

There is also a very important genetic factor that predisposes to clogged pores and uncontrolled bacterial growth, primarily Cutibacterium acnes, a Gram-positive, relatively slow-growing, non-sporulating, and anaerobic bacillus.

  • 85% of adolescents suffer from it to varying degrees of severity.

  • Almost 20% of adults also suffer from it, mostly women.

  • It is one of the 10 most prevalent skin conditions in the world.

  • Acne products are the best-selling cosmetic category for people under 30.

So far, the most popular treatments are pharmacological, both topical and systemic, and medical devices. The use of local antibiotics, such as erythromycin, is common; however, they can disrupt the skin's microbiota, leading to the development of other secondary conditions.

Adjuvant cosmetic products are mainly corrective and hygiene products, and their compositions are based on the use of ingredients that regulate sebum secretion, accelerate renewal to prevent the formation of comedones and blackheads, and hydrate and soothe the skin.

Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) is a bacillus that is part of the normal microbiota of the digestive tract and skin, found primarily in the oiliest areas where it feeds on the fatty acids secreted by the sebaceous glands. Several studies have found a close relationship between Cutibacterium acnes overgrowth and the development of various infections such as acne, endocarditis, and post-surgical infections. However, this bacterium has been observed to play a role in maintaining skin homeostasis and preventing pathogen colonisation. (1)

NB-CutiBalance is the first cosmetic bioactive that has demonstrated its effectiveness in regulating the overgrowth of Cutibacterium acnes associated with acne lesions, restoring its levels to those found in healthy skin, thus preserving its positive biological function.

A new cosmetological approach with high precision, proven efficacy, and extraordinary cutaneous tolerance for all skin types.
